Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy

The pelvic floor are the muscles found at the bottom of your pelvis, beginning behind the pubic bone and inserting into a common tendon surrounding the tailbone. Pelvic floor physiotherapists are trained to assess this area, diagnose the dysfunction, and provide treatment options.

Maria Gehue received her Bachelor of Kinesiology degree, with honours, from Memorial University in Newfoundland. Her research focused on Stroke Rehabilitation, which ultimately lead her towards pursuing a career in physiotherapy. She then went on to obtain her Master of Science in Physiotherapy at Dalhousie University and has called Halifax her home ever since.

Maria has a wealth of knowledge around human movement patterning, cross referencing her anatomy and biomechanics skillset to truly understand each individual patient’s structure. Her treatment style includes multi-plane functional assessments, manual therapy, soft tissue techniques, dry needling/trigger point therapy, neuro-proprioceptive taping and exercise prescription. She sees patients of all ages and fitness levels, focusing her treatment on accurately diagnosing the injury and creating individualized treatment plans.

In addition to her orthopaedic caseload, Maria is a trained pelvic floor physiotherapist. She is an active member of the Woman’s Health Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association and a strong advocate for this area of physiotherapy. She believes no mechanical dysfunction should go undiscussed, no matter how sensitive in nature the issues appear. She has completed advanced training to help women suffering from urinary incontinence, over-active bladder, pelvic organ prolapse, dyspareunia/painful intercourse (genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorder), chronic constipation, fecal incontinence/urgency, tailbone pain/trauma, diastasis recti/post-partum core recovery, preparing for and recovery from caesarean birth and vaginal birth, labour and delivery: maternal support through comfort measures and pelvic biomechanics. Maria is a trained support personal for women during labour and has recently started attending births. She also offers breast feeding support for women and infants, helping common conditions such as mastitis, blocked milk ducts, nipple trauma, engorgement, latch mechanics, tongue tie, and head turning preference.

Caitlin is a proud resident of East Hants, which she has called home for over 20 years. She is community focused, and her goal is to give back to and support the health and wellness of the people of East Hants.

In 2019, she graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Science in Medical Sciences, then further went on to complete her Master of Science of Physiotherapy in 2021. Caitlin is a member of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association, as well as the Nova Scotia Physiotherapy Association and is registered with the Nova Scotia College of Physiotherapists.

She believes in the importance of understanding her patients through anatomical and functional assessments. Caitlin’s treatments encompass a multimodal approach that include manual therapy, soft tissue techniques, dry needling, exercise prescription, and patient education. She values getting to know her patients, listening to their concerns and collaborating with them to create treatment plans that are individualized to their unique needs.

Caitlin is committed to continued learning. Since graduating, she has successfully completed her certifications for Dry Needling Level 1 & 2 through Acupuncture Canada. Caitlin has also completed her certifications for Level 1 and 2 Pelvic Health Physiotherapy, focusing on Urinary Incontinence and Dyspareunia (pain with intercourse).

She is passionate about helping women stay active and mobile throughout their pregnancy. Caitlin has taken additional courses that focus on physiotherapy assessment and treatment through pregnancy, especially for lumbopelvic pain, and pelvic girdle pain.

Caitlin also has a love for dance, and is keen to aid dancers with injury prevention and rehabilitation that is assisted by her 15 year dance training. In addition to her love of dance, Caitlin enjoys reading, spending time with loved ones and keeping an active lifestyle by hiking, biking, and camping with her partner and their young pup Tilley.

Catherine graduated from the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy Halifax campus in 2020 and is a good standing member of the Massage Therapy Association of Nova Scotia.Growing up Catherine was involved in multiple competitive activities including dancing at R.S.I Danceworks and go-kart racing during the summer months at Scotia Speedworld. While in high school she began her fitness journey starting with body building and progressed to powerlifting where she competed locally in Elmsdale NS and as well in Maine, USA. She now continues to stay active within the powerlifting community as a judge for the World Powerlifting Congress (WPC).With her history in dance, go-kart racing and body building/powerlifting she was no stranger to personal injuries and Catherine experienced the benefits of manual therapy and what they could do to help her injuries, pain management, rehabilitation and overall maintenance. This sparked Catherine’s desire to choose a career path of helping others on their journey of health and physical recovery.Having her own experience with different massage techniques and modalities, Catherine realized that it is not one type fits all when it comes to massage, this encouraged her to pursue other modalities to offer her clients and ensuring the best treatment outcomes that work for each individual client needs. While in massage therapy school, Catherine completed her certification for cupping therapy and continued with further post-graduate courses such as Gua Sha therapy, Fascial Stretch Therapy level 1, and extra training for prenatal; a topic in which Catherine hopes to advance her knowledge in over the upcoming years.
